Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ~ Matthew 28:19

On July 31, I have the privilege of baptizing my son, Alex, at Gull Lake Ministries while we were there for family camp. It was such a great experience for me personally to have the opportunity to baptize him myself. It was made more special in that I was baptized 20 years prior on the exact same day, July 31, 1994.

Why Get Baptized?

As Daniel Wallace pointed out in his message prior to the baptisms at GLM, Jesus asks us to be baptized. Easterners love pictures and metaphors and they read the Bible looking for the metaphor.

For example, when the Jewish leaders brought the woman caught in adultery to Jesus, Jesus wrote in the dust. We, westerners, read that we wonder what He wrote. A person with an Eastern mind doesn’t think about what he wrote but where else in scripture it talks about writing in the dust. This can be found in Jeremiah 17:13:

Lord, you are the hope of Israel;
all who forsake you will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust
because they have forsaken the Lord,glm-baptism
the spring of living water. (NIV)

So, in regards to baptism we do this for two reasons:
1. This is a picture of the burial and resurrection of Jesus
2. In obedience to Jesus

For those that have trusted Jesus, His shed blood covers our sins, He atoned for us the penalty we deserved. We follow Him and in so doing, get baptized in obedience to His word.

For You Died

Paul tells us in Colossians 3:1-3
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

We effectively, declare publicly that our “old” self is dead and we are a new creature in Christ. We now live for Christ and are no longer held in bondage by the sin that weighed us down. We are free in Christ Jesus having the grace which He so richly bestows.
