What’s Up in 2017?

I need 2017 to be less about myself. In this podcast episode I point out three things I want to strive to do better with in 2017:

  • Serve the Lord
  • Give Generously
  • Build up Others

Serve the Lord

I found some scripture that resonated with me while doing my morning devotions recently.

“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? ~ Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Then Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. And do not turn aside; for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. For the Lord will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you; but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. ~ 1 Samuel 12:20-14

When we seek the Lord first, we will serve Him well. When we serve the Lord, we do not chase after emptiness and things that profit us nothing as the verses in 1 Samuel talk about.

Give Generously

You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand. ~ Deuteronomy 15:10

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. ~ Matthew 6:20

Giving doesn’t only include money. We can give of our time, talent and skills as well. There is plenty of opportunity, for example, to give of your time to your church. You don’t have to look too hard to find a ministry that could use your skills and your time.

Build Up Others

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11

We are called to be encouragers of one another and to put other ahead of ourselves. This practice will serve us well in years to come.

Remember

Put a note on your mirror. Enter a reminder on your phone. Do something to help you remember and move forward in 2017!
