What is it to be a desperate parent? One of the definitions of “desperate” is – of extreme intensity. Being a desperate parent is relying on God and recognizing that regardless of how many books you read or workshops you attend, it is all up to God to grip the heart of your child.
In this episode, I talk with Pastor Brad Bigney about our need to depend on God in our role as parents.
1. Cry out to God in prayer.
Add to what you are doing, desperate prayer that God will get to the heart of your children.
Find a deep dependence upon God as you parent.
2. Cling to God’s word for grace
Come to grips with how many verses make it clear that we have no power.
2 Corinthians 12:9 – But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
John 15:5 – I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
3. Are willing to confess our own sins
Model forgiveness that to your own kids.
4. Are humble enough to allow others to speak to them about parenting
You don’t know it all as a parent, allow others to speak to you in this. Ask youth leaders, school teachers, etc. about how your kids are doing in class, on youth events, etc.
Watch out for building an idol out of your life at home. Your most important ministry is to take care of your wife/husband and your children.
